Effect of computers on the eye

By: Deepak Gupta (07/24/11) | 304 Views | 0 Comments

Eye strain has been reported with the most extensive computers users. Also referred to as computer vision syndrome or computer stress syndrome, it involves the manifestation of a variety of symptoms, such as eye strain, headache, and watering of eyes. Sometimes, it may be indicated by indirect symptoms, such as neck pain, shoulder pain, wrist pain, general fatigue, and decreased visual efficiency.

This article is dedicated to all computer users. In this article, we cover some important Do’s and Don’ts of using computers that will help computer users keep them away from computer vision syndrome or computer stress syndrome.

Important Do’s and Don’ts of using computers

Listed below are the important Do’s and Don’ts of using computers that you must consider if you are a regular computer user:

●      Keep a minimum distance of 25 inches between the computer screen and the eyes. If possible, then maintain more distance.

●      The monitor top should be lifted away from the eyes.

●      Use dark letters on a light background.

●      Keep the screen below the horizontal eye level.

●      Always use a chair with arms. Tilting the head forward causes less fatigue than the head erect posture.

●      Use indirect lighting suspended from the ceiling. Use curtains to avoid reflection due to outside light.

●      Avoid direct flow of air on your eyes. Low humidity or fumes also can lead to dry eyes.

●      Give your eyes a break after every 30 minutes.

●      Blink regularly and completely.

●      Close the eyelids and roll the eyes behind the closed lids clockwise and anti-clockwise.

●      Wear spectacles with antiglare lens to work on computers.

These are the important Do’s and Don’ts of using computers that will help you keep away from dry eye syndrome and computer vision syndrome. However, if you feel problems like eye strain, itching of eyes, redness of eyes, pain in headache, watering of eyes, etc. then never take them lightly.

Immediately consult an eye specialist because these symptoms indicate the dry eye syndrome or computer vision syndrome. You need immediate treatment because if you will delay the treatment then you may need to deal with vision impairment that no one would like to do.

In such cases, doctors often suggest taking precautions from dust, smoke, computers, etc. A professional computer user cannot take a break from using computers; therefore, doctors prescribe those using artificial tears or eye drops that lubricate their eyes. Additionally, you may not come into the direct contact of fire, smoke, and dust.
