How to Edit a Master Page in InDesign – A Step-by-Step Guide with Screenshots

Before, I tell you how to edit a master page in InDesign, let me give you a brief about benefits of master pages.

Master pages serve the purpose where you need to display the same text on all pages or some selected pages in a document. Headers and footers are most common examples where master pages are used. You can have Book Title in the header or footer on all pages using the master page. Likewise you can add page numbers, phone numbers, etc. And, the benefit of master page is you do not need to add the required text on all pages one by one. Just add the text in the master page, apply master page on the page where you want to see text from master page, and the text will appear automatically on that page(s).

How to Edit a Master Page in InDesign

Perform the below steps and you will be able to edit a master page in InDesign:

Step 1: Open the InDesign file in which you want to edit a master page. You will see pages panel on the right side of the InDesign file you have opened. If you cannot see that panel then press F12 and you will see the panel, as shown below:

Step 2: In the pages panel you can see A Master with two pages on its right side. Those are the master pages. Click anyone of those pages to edit a master page in InDesign.

Step 3: Click in the Text box in which you want to edit text and you are ready to edit text in a master page InDesign.

Step 3: Make changes in the text as per your requirements. You can add, edit, or delete text. You can make changes as you do in a text editor like Notepad, Microsoft Word, etc.

Step 4: Once you are done with making changes in the text, save the file. You can also add a text box in the master page, background color, background image, etc. in the master page similarly as you do in an individual page.
