How to Paginate in Indesign – a Quick Tutorial in 4 Parts
If you are new to new to InDesign and want to quickly learn how to paginate in InDesign, then you may find this post really helpful. I have divided it in 4 parts that will tell you

Before we start, I would like to tell you that I have constructed this tutorial in such a way that it can be followed for any version of InDesign.
Let us start with part 1 in the How to paginate in InDesign tutorial.
Part 1 – How to Create a Document in InDesign
Creating a new document in InDesign is as easier as creating a .txt file or a .doc file. Perform the following steps to know how to create a document in InDesign:
Step 1: Start InDesign.
Step 2: Select File > New> Document, as shown in the below image:
New Document dialog box appears, as shown in the below image:
Step 3: Fill out the following information in their respective fields to get the desired layout of the document. In this example, I am taking the size 6×9 with .5” margin for top, bottom, inside, and outside.
- Width: Enter 6”
- Height: Enter 9”
- Top: Enter .5”
- Bottom: Enter .5”
- Inside: Enter .5”
- Outside: Enter .5”
Step 4: Click the OK button. New Document is created, as shown in the below image:
Step 5: Save the document by selecting File > Save.
Once the document is created, let us see how to add text in a document in Design.
Part 2: How to Add Text in a Document in InDesign
It is the second and the most important part of our How to Paginate in Indesign tutorial, so read it carefully. Perform the below steps to add text in a document in Indesign:
Step 1: Click Type Tool () in the left tool bar and drag to create the text box.
Step 2: Pull the text box from the corner to adjust its width and height similar to the inner rectangle on the document you created.
Step 3: Place this text box on the inner rectangle. You can use Selection Tool () to place text box in the inner rectangle.
Step 4: Click in the text box.
Step 5: Copy text from the source file and paste in the text box you just created.
This is how to add text in a document in Indesign. Let us move ahead in the how to paginate in Indesign tutorial.
Part 3: How to Format Text in InDesign
In this part of the tutorial, we will see how to format text in InDesign. Whereas adding text in a document is important, formatting the text is much more important to get the desired look and feel for the different parts of the book. For example, Title of the book should look bigger and different from rest of the text, copyright text should be a few points smaller than the paragraph text, etc.
Perform the following steps to learn how to format text in Indesign:
Step 1: Select the text on which you want to apply some formatting like a specific font size, font type, etc.
Step 2: Select the Font Type, Font Size, alignment, etc. on the selected Font from the Tool bar at the top, which looks as shown below:
Note: If you do not see the top tool bar, then select Windows > Controls in the menu bar.
Step 3: Repeat Step 3 to apply desired formatting on the selected text. You can have any type of formatting on the selected text like bold, italics, underline, etc.
Let us see how to add pages in Indesign.
Part 4: How to add pages in InDesign
This is the last part of our How to paginate in Indesign quick tutorial. Adding pages in Indesign is not a difficult job. One can do it easily by executing the below steps:
Step 1: Select Windows > Pages. A panel showing thumbnails of pages will appear, as shown in the below image:
Step 2: Right click the page before or after which you want to add a page and select Insert Pages. The Insert Pages dialog box appears.
Note: Do not touch page thumbnails appearing next to [None] and A-Master.
Step 3: Enter number of pages to be entered.
Step 4: Click the down arrow in the Insert drop-down list and select After Page if you need to add pages after the page on which you have right clicked in Step 2. If you want to add pages before, then select Before Page.
Step 5: Click the OK button. New page(s) will be added and displayed in the Panel as well, as shown in the below image:
To go to a specific page, click the respective thumbnail in the Pages panel shown above. Number after each page in the panel shows its sequence in the document, so do not confuse it with the page number that you may add in document.
