Open InDesign CC Files in CS6 and Earlier Versions

Adobe has now gone into Cloud due to several reasons and therefore, upgraded versions of Adobe software are now available for purchase through Cloud only. Adobe InDesign has also booked its place in the Cloud and now available as Adobe InDesign CC. Whereas Adobe InDesign CC has a great look and feel with many new features, it may create problem for those who want to “Open InDesign CC Files in CS6” and earlier versions.

If you have created an INDD file in Adobe InDesign CC then it can only be opened in Adobe InDesign CC. You cannot open InDesign CC Files in CS6 or earlier versions. However, if you follow the process given herein below, then you may get access to those files with CS6 and earlier versions.

  • Before you start applying the process given below kindly create a copy of the original file.
  • If you do not have Adobe InDesign CC but have files created with it, then you may need to seek help of your friends who have Adobe InDesign CC, as the process described below will need Adobe InDesign CC at earlier stage.

Perform the following steps to Open InDesign CC Files in CS6 and earlier versions:

Step 1: Open INDD file with Adobe InDesign CC.

Step 2: Select File > Export.

Step 3: Select .idml from the Format menu.

Step 4: Save the file.

That’s all. Now, you can open this IDML file with any version of Adobe InDesign and then save it as .INDD file by selecting File > Save AS menu. It may happen that a few style elements are lost while you are saving INDD created in Adobe InDesign CC as IDML, but need not to worry about, as you may recreate those elements. In case, you are not able to recreate them, you still have the original INDD file with you, as I asked you to create a copy of the original InDesign file.
